Derby

Lurcher · Male · Adult · 6 years

Derby is a sensitive, gentle soul who is still finding his feet and learning that the world doesn’t have to be a scary place. A lot of things at the moment are frightening for him, but we are beginning to see small glimpses of his confidence growing. Although he can be very nervous, underneath his worries is an incredibly affectionate boy who absolutely loves human company. He really enjoys cuddles and gentle strokes, if you dare to stop fussing him, he will reach out with his paw and ask for more. It is impossible not to fall in love with his sweet personality. He spends much of his time curled up on his comfy bed, where he feels safe and secure, but he will pop out to say hello when a familiar face visits his kennel. He enjoys a run around to stretch his legs in compound area, but isn’t sure about toys yet so would much rather stay close his his handler. He’s had positive, friendly interactions with other dogs so we believe that he could potentially be re homed with a dog of a calm temperament and similar size – subject to a successful meet. Due to his nervous nature we believe that Derby would be best suited to living in a calm house with children who are 16 years and over – subject to success meet. It is likely that he would need multiple meets to get to know his new family before he goes home.

About Derby

What life with Derby looks like

Derby is a medium-sized adult lurcher dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Cheshire) in Warrington.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Derby, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Derby?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Cheshire) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Derby on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Derby if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Cheshire) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Derby already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Derby isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Cheshire) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Derby and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
