Dexter

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel · Male · Senior · 9 years

📍 Location: Elsecar, near Barnsley Dexter is a sweet, gentle 9-year-old Cavalier who is looking for a calm and understanding forever home. He enjoys being close to his people and loves companionship, particularly from men. Although he is not an overly cuddly dog, he prefers affection on his own terms. Despite being deaf, Dexter has adapted remarkably well and responds very effectively to hand signals. He already knows how to sit and give a paw, and he enjoys interacting with his people and being included in day-to-day life. Dexter travels beautifully in the car and enjoys outings. He walks nicely on the lead overall, although he can occasionally be a little stubborn and decide he would rather choose the route himself! Due to his mobility issues, longer walks may require the use of a buggy so he can rest comfortably when needed. He settles well at home, sleeps happily on his own bed in the bedroom overnight, and generally ignores other dogs when out and about. Dexter could live as an only dog or alongside a calm existing dog. Dexter is currently overweight and has already started his weight loss journey in foster care. Keeping him slim will be extremely important for his long-term comfort, mobility, and quality of life. ✅ Health conditions: Dexter has multiple ongoing medical conditions, including chronic pain, hip dysplasia, spinal issues, allergies, recurrent pododermatitis/interdigital cysts, dry eye, pigmentary keratitis, and deafness. He is also currently overweight and requires careful long-term weight management. 💊 On medication? Yes – Gabapentin, Paracetamol, and ongoing eye medication and monitoring. Dexter will require adopters who are financially and emotionally prepared to continue managing his medical needs long term. His conditions are pre-existing and are therefore will not be covered by insurance. 🐾 Behaviour traits: Gentle, affectionate in his own way, calm, enjoys company, occasionally stubborn, but very sweet 🎾 Activity level: Low to moderate 📚 Training required: Continued weight loss programme, sensible exercise routine, and ongoing use of hand signal communication due to deafness. 🏡 Type of home required: Calm, understanding home with a secure garden and adopters committed to properly managing his medical conditions and weight long term. 📌 Important Notes ✔️ Dexter’s ongoing medical conditions are lifelong and will require continued management and veterinary care. ✔️ Keeping Dexter slim is essential for his long-term comfort and mobility. ✔️ Longer walks may require use of a buggy due to his orthopaedic issues. ✔️ No young children. ✔️ Home check and meet & greet required within 7–10 days of applying. ✔️ Please read our adoption procedure before applying:

About Dexter

What life with Dexter looks like

Dexter is a senior cavalier king charles spaniel dog waiting at Bliss Cavalier Rescue in United Kingdom.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dexter, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dexter?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Bliss Cavalier Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dexter on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dexter if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Bliss Cavalier Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dexter already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dexter isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Bliss Cavalier Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dexter and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
