Dona

Mastiff · Female · Adult · 4 years

Dona, a female Mastiff, approximately 69 cm tall and weighing around 42 kg, is looking for a new home. She was born on August 11, 2018, and is friendly with children, including larger ones, and is compatible with other dogs and cats, although this needs to be tested. Dona is spayed. According to her veterinarian, she is microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and has a negative Mediterranean test result. She has a history of being abandoned as a puppy and grew up on the streets of a village. The villagers fed her but were unable to catch her due to her fear. At 8 months old, Dona contracted Leishmaniasis, lost weight, and sustained injuries. The villagers were very concerned, but they did not give up. With the right treats, they finally managed to catch her. A veterinarian recommended euthanasia for Dona, but this was not an option, so the animal welfare organization was called for help. Dona was taken to a foster home, where the caregivers worked hard, but she could not overcome her fears. In the shelter, the other dogs helped her trust humans. Within a few days, she transformed into a sweet little girl, cheerful and playful. Dona is a loving dog, but she finds it difficult to trust humans. She gets along very well with other animals, including cats! A dog should be present in her new home to provide her with help and security in her new world. Dona is house-trained and well-behaved. Once she overcomes her fears, she will be a happy, loving dog. A dog to cuddle and love. When Dona is happy, she offers her paw and enjoys the petting. Dona is a challenge, and those who take her on will be rewarded. A whole dog's life! Applications can be made at www.pfotenhilfe-sachsen.de.

About Dona

What life with Dona looks like

Dona is a large adult mastiff dog waiting at Notfellchen Rumänien e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dona, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dona?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Notfellchen Rumänien e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dona on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dona if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Notfellchen Rumänien e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dona already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dona isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Notfellchen Rumänien e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dona and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
