Dory

Female Β· Adult Β· 5 years

Dory is a handsome Border Collie/Aussie female, 5 years old. She came to us as a stray and has not been claimed by her owner. Dory has lived briefly in another home, but has returned. Dory has true characteristics of a Border Collie/Aussie. She wants to work. A simple walk will not be enough for her. We are looking for an owner who wants to do something with her. In addition to good walks, her head must also be put to work. This can be in the form of brain work, tracking, agility or other dog sports. This lady likes to play with a ball. If you are too slow, she will tell you. She also knows a number of commands and enjoys performing them, as long as she is just busy with you. During the walk, Dory walks nicely on a leash. However, she reacts differently to other dogs. She can ignore another dog during the walk, but she can also lash out. Dory finds other dogs exciting and can bite when in direct contact with other dogs. She regularly goes to the polder and you can see her enjoying it. Rain or shine, Dory is always up for an adventure. Is there mud on the path? Dory doesn't mind and just goes through it. Unfortunately, Dory finds it a bit harder in our shelter. She hears other dogs and becomes restless from this. Therefore, she is allowed to rest at the office regularly and this does her good. She can get a bit restless if she hears the other dogs barking. She then wants to look out the window or starts panting more. Usually someone is with her at the office, but sometimes she has to be left alone. She then lies down quietly and doesn't mind if you leave. Our expectation is that she can stay alone for a few hours after getting used to it. Dory is a sweetheart to adults. She likes to come to you to cuddle and can stand against you. To children, Dory is anxious. Although she can ignore children during the walk, she shows fear when children are too close. If it gets too much for her, she can lash out at them. We are therefore looking for a quiet household without young children, (young) adults are no problem for her, on the other hand. Dory is currently experiencing a lot of stress in our shelter. We also notice this in her stool. That is why she is currently receiving special food to support her intestines. Dory has also been walking irregularly for a while and we have started painkillers for this. In addition, she also receives physiotherapy treatments. After the first treatment, we already saw a visible difference in her way of walking. At the moment, she is still receiving painkillers, but it is possible that these can be phased out if the physiotherapy treatments are continued. We hope to find a nice home for Dory soon, someone who knows what a Border Collie/Aussie needs. If you think you can offer Dory a suitable home, do not wait too long and fill in the application form!

NLΒ·Show original

About Dory

What life with Dory looks like

Dory is an adult dog waiting at Dierenopvangcentrum Breda in Breda.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡³πŸ‡±Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dory, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dory?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenopvangcentrum Breda handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dory on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dory if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Dierenopvangcentrum Breda will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Dory already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dory isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenopvangcentrum Breda early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dory and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
