Doukas

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 4 months

Male dog DOUKAS, born approx. 08/2020, shoulder height approx. 60+ cm, weight approx. 28+ kilos, looking for a basket starting immediately. The siblings Vefa and Doukas have spent a large part of their lives together so far – unfortunately under anything but pleasant conditions. As young dogs they were repeatedly abandoned in different places and eventually kept on a chain for years. Much of what is taken for granted by other dogs they were therefore never able to experience. Despite their past, both are friendly and, once they have gained trust, gladly allow closeness to us humans. Vefa is somewhat more outgoing than her brother. Given a little time, she gradually thaws out, starts to play, and has even been known to offer her paw to someone. Doukas also allows closeness, but he needs a bit longer and more trust for it. For both, a move to Germany will mean a huge change. Suddenly there are new people, unfamiliar sounds, road traffic, cars, strange smells, walking routes, a house, stairs, household noises, and countless new impressions. Things like vacuum cleaners, televisions, doorbells, or passing bicycles and cars can unsettle them at first, because they have simply never experienced many of these things. Walking on a leash and living outside an animal shelter are also things they still have to get to know. Their people should therefore not expect Vefa or Doukas to confidently navigate their new everyday life right after arrival. They will need time to settle in, build trust, and understand that they are now safe. Especially in the first period, they need people who give them calm, security, and orientation, and who guide them step by step into their new life with loving, confident leadership. Important: both are livestock guardian dogs. Their future people should definitely inform themselves thoroughly in advance about the special characteristics and needs of these dogs and ideally already bring relevant dog experience. Livestock guardian dogs are not classic companion dogs, but independent, watchful dogs with a pronounced protective instinct. A rural environment as far as possible, suitable housing conditions, and people who understand and respect their traits are therefore especially important. After six years, in which the two were barely able to determine their own lives, we wish for Vefa and Doukas that they finally find their own people. People who show them what safety, trust, and a true home feel like. They have lost so much time – now their good years should finally begin. 🤍🐾 We do not place dogs in very urban housing or with families with toddlers. Please only submit an adoption inquiry if taking over the dog is possible at the time mentioned in the text and you have already discussed adding a new family member with your family (and, where relevant, other involved persons such as employers, landlords, or temporary caregivers). Please note that the dogs described here are currently in their large foster placement or at the animal shelter, in a limited, safe environment, with little contact to other people or environmental stimuli outside the property. The descriptions are based on behavior in this familiar environment. Puppies and young dogs in particular are still developing their character. For a successful settling-in period in a new home, they need time, patience, and loving guidance to get used to the new surroundings and the various stimuli, and to grow into secure dogs.

About Doukas

What life with Doukas looks like

Doukas is a large puppy mixed breed dog waiting at Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) in Germany.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Doukas, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Doukas?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Doukas on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Doukas if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Doukas already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Doukas isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Doukas and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
