Adopt Dudu

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Dudu originally came from Spain and is a really nice guy. He enjoys going for walks, is open and curious, and behaves well on the leash as long as there are no other dogs or other distractions (riders, walkers) on his path at the beginning. This initially throws him off balance, so it's important to be firm in such situations. He barks loudly. Dudu had a certain stress level at the beginning of his walks outside the animal shelter, which he can now regulate better over time. It would be great if he could continue to work on this. His handler has worked with him a lot in between, so he is now easily recallable and other dogs can also pass him without a problem. But this takes time. He has learned to sit during this. With a great treat, it works even better. Good management on the leash is helpful for Dudu, as it gives him security. Whether he is fundamentally incompatible with other dogs cannot be said at the moment. It is possible that he has never learned to communicate with fellow animals in a reasonable way and is therefore overwhelmed. This can certainly still be worked on. Dudu is very people-oriented. He needs dog-experienced people who can give him security and trust and are especially patient. You need to be able to lead him and convey calm and stability to him. Since he has a lot of strength on the leash, you should also be physically matched to him. Dudu likes people very much, is clingy, and enjoys physical contact. His ten years are not noticeable at all! For Dudu, we are looking for dog friends who have a lot of time and can show him the sunny sides of life. Working on his problem with fellow animals is absolutely necessary, as this is quite exhausting during walks. If you are interested in meeting Dudu, please send us a detailed email.

About Dudu

What life with Dudu looks like

Dudu is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Köln in Cologne.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dudu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dudu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Köln handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dudu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dudu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Köln will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dudu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dudu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Köln early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dudu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
