Duke

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Duke is a very special tomcat – not only because of his characteristic folded ears, typical of the Scottish Fold breed, but also due to his calm and gentle nature. Initially, in the foster home, Duke proved to be a very cozy housemate: for two weeks, he limited his movements to the essentials – from the armchair upstairs to the food bowl and litter box downstairs and back. He gladly accepts cuddles but also shows in a friendly and clear manner when it's too much for him. Due to his noticeable lack of mobility, he was examined by a veterinarian. The X-rays revealed that Duke's paws and knee joints are heavily calcified – a result of the genetic defect responsible for the typical folded ears of the breed. This condition, called osteochondrodysplasia, causes painful changes throughout the musculoskeletal system in Scottish Fold cats. These calcifications cannot be cured. For the past four weeks, Duke has been receiving the medication Solensia, which specifically targets pain associated with arthritis – and the effect is impressive: Duke is much more active, now independently climbs stairs, plays with ribbons and shoelaces, and greets his humans loudly at the food bowl in the morning. Of course, he won't become a wild climber again, but he clearly enjoys life once more. Duke is looking for a quiet home with loving people who can provide him with the care and attention he deserves. He is gentle, people-oriented, and content – and a true heart on four paws. Whoever adopts Duke will get a very special companion and should be aware that he may need ongoing medical support due to his genetic predisposition. Just write to us. As soon as we receive your message, we will get back to you as quickly as possible. Please allow us one to two days for a response.

About Duke

What life with Duke looks like

Duke is a adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. in Germany.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Duke, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Duke?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Duke on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Duke if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Duke already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Duke isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Duke and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
