Duke

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Duke lives in the G-Girls WG (Gudrun, Greta, Graziella) together with Burli and Adino. He is still a friendly fellow who waits until the commotion dies down before trying his luck at getting treats. In the shelter, he seems to subordinate himself and avoids trouble. December 2019 May 2019 November 2018 Duke has grown into a beautiful young male with a lot of power. He is a bit wary of strangers, but curious. If you behave calmly, he will come over and let you pet him. Duke would certainly like a family that does a lot with him and shows him the world. This way, he can overcome his remaining fears. He has certainly inherited the genes and characteristics of a livestock guardian dog. These dogs are often somewhat aloof towards strangers, but very loyal to their people and protect the house, yard, and family. Livestock guardian dogs belong in experienced hands and can be very good family dogs. Please read more about it. Duke came to the shelter as a very small puppy and has therefore learned very little. His social behavior in dog society is very good, but unfortunately, he has not had any experience with living with people in a house. Please read the information on deprivation syndrome here. July 2018 February 2018 August 2017 On August 8, Levente found Duke and his little brother Dalton at a spring near the shelter. Many people from Ditrău and the surrounding area go there to get good drinking water, but no one took care of the little ones. They were already half starved. Now they are with us, well cared for. Duke is still shy. We hope he will soon learn to trust people. Adoptable only by experienced people.

About Duke

What life with Duke looks like

Duke is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Initiative Karpatenstreuner e.V. in Romania.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇷🇴Adopting from Romania

Romanian rescues handle the highest volume of cross-border adoptions in the EU. Animals are quarantined and fully vetted before transport. Reputable rescues maintain detailed health records and post-adoption follow-up.

Frequently asked

Adopting Duke, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Duke?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Initiative Karpatenstreuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Duke on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Duke if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Initiative Karpatenstreuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Duke already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Duke isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Initiative Karpatenstreuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Duke and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
