Effie&#8217

Mixed Breed Cat · Unknown · Kitten · 3 months

Effie’s kittens have had a slightly unusual start to life, and because of this, they are looking for a very special home that will allow them to settle in at their own pace. During their time in foster care, their mum, Effie, developed severe maternal aggression towards her foster carers. This meant that, for everyone’s safety, the fosterers were unable to have the usual level of hands-on interaction with the kittens while they were with their mum. We made the decision to take a hands-off approach and give Effie the space she needed until the kittens were fully weaned and ready to be separated. As a result, these kittens are a little more sassy and independent than some kittens! They have not had the same amount of early human interaction that many foster kittens receive, and we want to be open about this with potential adopters. While patience, kindness and positive experiences may help them become more confident, we cannot promise that they will all grow into cuddly lap cats. Their behaviour may also have a genetic component, so we are looking for adopters who are happy to accept each kitten for who they are rather than taking them on with the expectation that they can be “brought round”. These little characters will need a calm, understanding home where they can settle in at their own pace. They should have access to a safe outdoor space once they are old enough and fully ready to explore, giving them the opportunity to enjoy life as confident little adventurers. They may potentially be able to live with other pets and older children, provided everyone is calm, respectful and able to understand that these kittens may need time and space to build trust. Ultimately, we want Effie’s kittens to have the freedom to become the cats they are meant to be. Some may discover that they love a cuddle and become wonderful lap cats; others may prefer to keep their humans at arm’s length and embrace life as independent explorers. Either way, we are looking for families who will love them, respect their boundaries and celebrate their individual personalities. Could you be the patient and understanding home that one of Effie’s kittens needs?

About Effie&#8217

What life with Effie&#8217 looks like

Effie&#8217 is a puppy/kitten mixed breed cat cat waiting at Thornberry Animal Sanctuary in United Kingdom.

Kittens are tiny chaos engines for about six months and then mellow rapidly. They need two scheduled feedings, a litter box per cat plus one extra, and somewhere high to climb. Spay/neuter happens around six months — most shelters arrange this before adoption.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Effie&#8217, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Effie&#8217?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Thornberry Animal Sanctuary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Effie&#8217 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Effie&#8217 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Thornberry Animal Sanctuary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Effie&#8217 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Effie&#8217 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Thornberry Animal Sanctuary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Effie&#8217 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
