Väike Elara jõudis turvakodu kaitsvate seinte vahele koos oma ema Freydise, vanaema Gudridi ja õdede-vendadega Manni külast. Ta oli pesakonna kõige väiksem ning vajas seetõttu ka rohkem inimese abi. Regulaarne kaalumine, lisasöötmine ja tähelepanelik jälgimine, mis siin salata, vahel ka öötundide arvelt, andsid pisikesele tüdrukule võimaluse kosuda ning teistega sammu pidada. Ilma selle abita oleks nii õrna kassipoja võimalused õues hakkama saada olnud kahjuks väga väikesed. Elara sai üsna kiiresti selgeks, et inimest ei ole vaja karta. Söögikorrad ei tähendanud ainult kõhutäidet, vaid ka mõnusaid paisid ja kurgu alt sügamisi. Kui kõht sai täis, oli kõige parem fliisi sees süles silmad kinni panna ja natuke tukastada. Nii õppis väike Elara, et inimese läheduses on hea ja turvaline olla. Peab ütlema, et paid ja sülle pugemine on tema lemmiktegevus siiani. Elara on aga ka mängulusti ja vallatusi täis. Tema päevad mööduvad kaaslastega mürades ja ringi möllates ning vahel lööb kampa ka nende nooruke emme. Küll siis on vahva koos suletuti järele hüpata ja vaadata, kes kõrgemale jaksab hüpata.
