Elfie

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

The charming Elfie was admitted to us on November 30, 2025. Originally from Serbia, she was adopted by a very dog-loving and loving couple from Deutschlang, Germany, who lived with her for several years in a remote house in the Swedish forests. At the beginning of 2025, her owners brought her back to Germany because her mistress had fallen ill with cancer. Despite intensive medical efforts, her mistress passed away, and her master could not overcome the loss of his wife and chose to end his own life. A very tragic story, also for Elfie, who lost both her trusted people within a short time. Her master brought her to us for day care on the day of his chosen death. An hour before the agreed pickup time, a driver arrived with Elfie's belongings and a very long and heartfelt farewell letter explaining the situation and earnestly asking us to keep Elfie and either find her a new home or allow her a semi-happy life at the animal shelter. This was accompanied by a donation to ensure Elfie's maintenance at the shelter financially. He had therefore thought a lot about his dog and did not simply abandon Elfie irresponsibly – what is beautiful about this whole sad story. Despite all these events, Elfie is a cheerful, open dog. She loves walks and cuddles. She would rather always be with us. She gets along well with some dogs, but not so smoothly with others. Whether she is compatible with cats, we are not sure, but we suspect it. She is house-trained, travels easily by car, stays alone, and walks properly on a leash. On walks, she likes to show off tricks for which she would love some treats: She is physically fit and looks forward to excursions. We are looking for a loving home for Elfie where she can spend her twilight years. If you would like to meet Elfie, please call us.

About Elfie

What life with Elfie looks like

Elfie is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Häuser der Hoffnung e.V. in Grassau.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Elfie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Elfie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Häuser der Hoffnung e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Elfie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Elfie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Häuser der Hoffnung e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Elfie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Elfie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Häuser der Hoffnung e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Elfie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
