Elisa

Mixed Breed · Female

Elisa, a friendly rabbit, has been surrendered to us and is now looking for a loving forever home with at least one companion animal. She currently lives in a small rabbit group and gets along well with her peers. She is very interested in people, greets visitors curiously and allows herself to be handled carefully. In her new home, there must be a large enclosure and daily outdoor time. The minimum requirements for enclosure sizes can be found here. Outdoor housing is just right for Elisa. It should be noted that Elisa cannot dig her way out and that protection from predators is guaranteed. Shade places must also be provided. Various retreat options such as sleeping burrows and structural elements for entertainment must not be missing. Since rabbits are not cuddly but observation animals, they prefer to spend time with their peers than with humans. She was surrendered with a rabbit that we suspected had snuffles, but Elisa showed no symptoms. Due to her one droopy ear, attention should be paid to possible infections. This animal comes from the mating of a representative of a breeding line. The breeding-related morphological and/or physiological changes in so-called breeding lines can lead to behavioral disorders and are associated with physical suffering and pain for the animals. According to § 11b Animal Welfare Act, breeding such animals is prohibited. Lop rabbits suffer from the consequences of their bent ear canal: They are prone to hearing problems, limited communication with peers and have a significantly increased risk of ear and dental diseases. Regular veterinary ear and dental examinations, a long-term medication therapy up to operations of the ear canals may be necessary. If animals suffer anatomically, it is a breeding line. As advocates for animals, we reject these. Pet owners who support such breeding are acting irresponsibly.

About Elisa

What life with Elisa looks like

Elisa is a large adult mixed breed rabbit waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Rabbits are social animals — most shelters recommend adopting them in bonded pairs rather than alone. They need fresh hay daily, several hours of out-of-cage time, and rabbit-safe spaces to explore. They live eight to twelve years, longer than many people expect.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

Paperwork, vet checks and transport rules differ by species and by country. Ask the shelter what is included and what you will need to arrange before you commit.

Frequently asked

Adopting Elisa, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Elisa?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Elisa on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Elisa if I live in another country?
Sometimes. Whether a rabbit can move between countries depends on the species and the rules in both countries, and some species need permits or have restrictions. Ask Tierheim Hamburg what paperwork and transport they require, and check the import rules of your country before you commit.
Is Elisa already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
What a rabbit comes with (vet checks, vaccinations, identification, paperwork) varies by shelter and species. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask Tierheim Hamburg directly what is included and what Elisa still needs.
What happens if Elisa isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Elisa and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
