Adopt Emma

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

Emma is an 8-year-old Appenzeller Sennenhund. She is open, friendly and joyful towards people she trusts. If the other person has the necessary trust and confidence, she is affectionate, playful, cuddly, and obedient. Our Emma is not spayed because she copes well with her heat periods. We never wanted puppies, so we never had her bred and always kept her on a leash during her heat periods. We can no longer do justice to Emma. Due to time constraints, she gets less attention than she deserves, which is unfair to her, as she is a great female dog! Emma loves walks, cycling, ball games and swimming, and she also enjoyed agility and tracking in the past. She attended puppy classes, had a dog trainer, and we did a lot with her (vacations, training, etc.). Our professional and family situation has changed. Therefore, we thought she could spend half a day at the dog daycare so she would not be alone. However, she did not want to stay there from day one. She prefers being alone at home rather than with people she does not trust or know. Now that the second child has arrived, we have even less time for our Emma, so we have reluctantly decided to rehome her. At home, there are children and chickens, and she gets along well with both. However, she does not like cats. We wish for someone who is familiar with the breed and has enough time for her. Compatibility with other dogs depends, as often, on sympathy. Overall, she gets along very well with almost all dogs. Strangers are suspicious to her at first, and she shows this. They are watched critically and barked at. Especially at home, which can be very stressful. People who see her for the first time sometimes fear her. She is and remains a guard dog and a herding dog. Emma is definitely not a dog for beginners who are just thrown into the cold water. She needs clear rules, some management, structure and a clear mind when dealing with her - which you show and enforce with confidence, patience and love. Please write to us. As soon as we receive your message, we will contact you as soon as possible. Please give us one or two days for a response.

About Emma

What life with Emma looks like

Emma is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Emma, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Emma?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Emma on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Emma if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Emma already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Emma isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Euskirchen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Emma and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
