Adopt Erna

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 11 years

♀, born ca. 6/2014 confident - independent in 14165 Berlin-Zehlendorf Erna is a ca. 6/2014 born Podenco(-mix?)-female dog with a shoulder height of ca. 40 cm. In June '17, Erna was picked up in very poor condition along with two other dogs and brought to an animal shelter in Rota/Spain. She was initially frightened and needed some time to trust people. She was rehomed after only a few weeks, but has lost her home multiple times due to her behavior. Erna is a sensitive female dog, looking for owners with patience and empathy. Harshness and pressure greatly unsettle her. In the house, she is a female dog who spends a lot of time in her dog bed, which she fiercely defends. She does not like to be touched and will suddenly snap. She gets along well with fellow animals outside, and in the house as well, as long as she avoids her place. The same applies to cats. Erna is very food-aggressive and extremely greedy. In the house and garden, she is very alert and barks a lot. She loves to lie in the sun in the garden. Erna walks well on a leash, knows how to ride in a car, and is also familiar with public transportation. Although she is not exactly young anymore, she is still energetic and loves to run across the fields and especially to search for mouse holes. Then she cannot be called back and eats everything she finds. Erna is already neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested negative for Mediterranean diseases. She is in a foster home in 14165 Berlin-Zehlendorf. The adoption fee for Erna is 300 Euro. Would you like to give Erna a home? About Erna

What life with Erna looks like

Erna is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. in Berlin.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Erna, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Erna?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Erna on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Erna if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Erna already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Erna isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Erna and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
