Ernie

Jack Russell Terrier · Male · Senior · 8 years

Meet Ernie Ernie is an almost 9-year-old Jack Russell Cross who is looking for a loving forever home where he can enjoy life at his own leisurely pace. This little sweetheart is incredibly affectionate and loves spending time with his people. He enjoys his short walks and taking things nice and easy, but don’t let his age fool you — Ernie still has a playful side and loves nothing more than having a mad few minutes with his favourite toys! Ernie would thrive in a quiet, peaceful home where he can relax and enjoy the simple things in life. He can find other dogs a little intimidating, particularly larger dogs or those who are very energetic. While he may potentially be able to live with another small, calm dog, we feel Ernie would be happiest as the only dog in the home, where he can have all the attention to himself. Ernie could possibly live with older, sensible children who understand that he enjoys his peace and quiet and will give him space when he needs it. Ernie is a lovely little character who has so much love to give. All he needs now is someone who will appreciate his gentle nature and give him the calm, happy retirement he deserves.

About Ernie

What life with Ernie looks like

Ernie is a small senior jack russell terrier dog waiting at Durham Dogs & Cats Home in United Kingdom.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ernie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ernie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Durham Dogs & Cats Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ernie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ernie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Durham Dogs & Cats Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ernie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ernie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Durham Dogs & Cats Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ernie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
