Esme

Mixed Breed · Female

Beautiful Esme is looking for love again – and we really hope she won’t have to wait too long this time. Esme originally came to WAW as a youngster and waited patiently for her forever home before being adopted in 2022. Sadly, due to a relationship breakdown and a change in her family’s circumstances, Esme now needs to find a new home. We want to make one thing absolutely clear: Esme has done nothing wrong. This lovely girl hasn’t caused her return to rescue, and her family have had to make a very difficult decision. Now four years old, Esme is a gorgeous girl who deserves the chance to find stability, security and someone to love her for the rest of her life. Esme is housetrained and will let you know when she needs to go outside. She travels well in the car and can comfortably be left at home for up to around four hours. She’s generally a confident girl, although sudden noises can sometimes spook her. With people she doesn’t know, she can be a little unsure about having her head touched and will simply move away if she’s uncomfortable. Giving her the time and space to get to know you is important. The vets are a particularly scary place for Esme and she becomes very frightened during visits. She has never bitten or shown aggression, but her new family will need to understand her anxiety and work with their vet to make appointments as stress-free as possible. Esme is a big, strong girl who can pull on the lead, so she needs someone who is physically confident handling her and willing to continue working on her lead walking. She has never lived with another dog. She’s generally fine when she sees dogs out and about, although if another dog barks at her, she’s likely to answer back! We’d like Esme to be the only dog in her new home, where she can have all the attention to herself. She has never lived with cats or other pets, so we’re also looking for a home without other animals. Esme hasn’t lived with or spent significant time around children, so an adult home would be the best fit for her. Please don’t let Esme wait too long! It took Esme a little while to find her family the first time around, and it’s heartbreaking to see her needing our help again through absolutely no fault of her own. She’s still a young dog with so much life ahead of her. What she needs now is someone who can look beyond her size and strength and see the lovely girl underneath – someone who can offer her consistency, patience, exercise and, most importantly, a home she can finally call hers for good. About Esme

What life with Esme looks like

Esme is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Warrington Animal Welfare in Warrington.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Esme, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Esme?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Warrington Animal Welfare handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Esme on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Esme if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Warrington Animal Welfare will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Esme already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Esme isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Warrington Animal Welfare early rather than rehoming privately; they know Esme and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
