Adopt Ferdinand

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 12 years

Mix Ferdinand is now the boss of the house. Our cheerful mix Meckeropa Ferdinand has now achieved prince status and enjoys his life in Mutzschen. My name is Ferdinand. I am male, neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and born around 2002. I am about 55 cm tall. I have been waiting since September 2014 for a new home. This is what my caregivers say about me: Ferdinand is a dog taken over from another club. He lives with another male dog here, is generally compatible, but does not like to be greeted too vigorously by unfamiliar dogs, even though he is generally compatible. Then he becomes grumpy, but calms down quickly again. It is important for him to be the boss and to be treated with respect by other animals. He is always friendly towards people, and is very popular among our youngest dog walkers. He loves cuddles and long walks. For his age, he is fit and agile. Ferdinand is perfect for beginners, for working people, but would also feel at home with adventurous retirees who are always around him. He can be rehomed in an apartment, a house with a garden would certainly suit him as well. He is generally relaxed and pleasant in the house, can be left alone, is house-trained and no longer makes any mischief. Car rides should still be trained, they are suspicious to him. He sometimes has cheerful episodes, which is how he got his name. Ferdinand can be kept as a single dog, but also as a second dog, preferably with a confident female dog. Anyone interested in this nice gentleman can come visit us and Ferdi. This cat is to be kept indoors only.

About Ferdinand

What life with Ferdinand looks like

Ferdinand is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ferdinand, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ferdinand?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ferdinand on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ferdinand if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ferdinand already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ferdinand isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ferdinand and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
