Adopt Franz (Lehar)

European Shorthair · Male · Senior · 16 years

Our dear Franz Lehar came to us as a stray tomcat at the animal shelter. The charming senior has already experienced a lot, but has preserved his loving character. Franz is FIV-positive (Feline AIDS). This means that he has a weakened immune system and therefore can only be rehomed in suitable for apartment living. Socialization is possible with other FIV-positive cats. He could also move in with healthy cats if the owners are experienced and aware of the (very low) risk of transmission - because FIV is mainly transmitted through deep bite wounds or sexual contact. Since Franz is a very relaxed companion at our shelter and doesn't start any fights, we don't see any problems there. Franz is already an older tomcat and has few teeth - most had to be removed. But this hardly bothers him in daily life. He gets along well with wet food and enjoys his food as well as his cuddles. With his trusted people, Franz shows his true nature: very cuddly, friendly and clingy. He seeks the company of humans and is happy with every attention. For Franz, we wish a quiet home where he can spend his golden years in security.

About Franz (Lehar)

What life with Franz (Lehar) looks like

Franz (Lehar) is a senior european shorthair cat waiting at Tierheim Northeim.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Franz (Lehar), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Franz (Lehar)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Northeim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Franz (Lehar) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Franz (Lehar) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Northeim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Franz (Lehar) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Franz (Lehar) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Northeim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Franz (Lehar) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
