Freddo? Sferruzza il pelo del tuo cane

Mixed Breed · Unknown

In Alpago, a textile company uses the undercoat of shepherd dogs. As the first cold weather arrives, the desire to wrap up in a nice sweater and bring out all those very warm wool sweaters that have been waiting in the wardrobes for months to be worn during autumn and winter returns. So today, we will talk about wool, sweaters, and garments and accessories made entirely by hand. But what do they have to do with the canine world? Perhaps not everyone knows that, even in Italy, there are companies that produce the warmest material there is - wool, precisely, weaving the dogs' fur. More specifically, their undercoat. As we have already written in other articles, the undercoat of dogs has great insulating and thermal properties and is able to provide an effective protection against low temperatures. This kind of protection is especially necessary for breeds selected to withstand difficult conditions and therefore have thick fur. But many beautiful mixed-breed dogs also have this feature and can "donate" their soft coat once they lose it. Yes, because the companies we are talking about are obviously animal-friendly businesses that do not involve any mistreatment to obtain the material: it is simply collected by combing the animals during the shedding period. The companies then collect this, which is considered a genuine and precious raw material, and process it into a completely valid and warm yarn, which has even been given a name: "chiengora". Among Italian companies, we want to mention Farm Manufacture Alpago Cashmere, a reality in Tambre d'Alpago that has been collecting the undercoat of the shepherd dogs from Lessinia and Lagorai for five years now, and by mixing it in small percentage with Brogna sheep's wool, obtains a yarn used to make handmade garments and accessories by the owner, Martina Tomas. Another company, Lana di cane, based in the Marche region, offers pet owners the possibility to send the undercoat of their dogs (and cats!) to create personalized wool balls that will become sweaters, hats, scarves, but also small felt objects. Projects like those of Farm Manufacture Alpago Cashmere and Lana di cane are creative, sustainable, and artisanal, combining tradition and love for animals, offering a comfortable opportunity to be in contact with the coats of our animals and feel the warmth that they can still transmit in this way.
