Gandalf

Mixed Breed · Female

"This is a Jack Russell Terrier, isn't it?" Owners of Bodegueros or mixed breeds of this funny Spanish terrier breed know this question very well, and the answer after "No, it's a Bodeguero." is usually a long, supported by a wide grin, praise song for the animal at the end of the leash. The Bodeguero is slightly larger than the Jack Russell, but that is not the only, and above all, not the decisive difference. Unlike their usually very restless and barking British counterparts, the Bodeguero is considered very balanced - and is often the better companion for children. However, of course, the Spaniard is also a typical terrier: friendly, obedient, hardworking, sometimes a bit stubborn and extremely playful. The prey drive of these funny creatures is often not to be underestimated, after all, they were specifically bred as rat catchers. Four of these wonderful solo performers recently came into the care of Arca Sevilla. Gandalf, Nena, Neno and Indira came from a shepherd (they are not German Shepherds, but just the shepherd's dogs), who did not want to keep the litter of his female dog. At least the small terrier heads made it through alive, which is not always the case in Spain, and now they are waiting with a loving foster family for great people who are looking for a dog that fits them. Sixteen cheerful paws, eight curious eyes and four mischievous noses are currently running around in the house of their host parents. Toys (and everything that the rascal group defines as such) are carried around and found everywhere where you don't expect them, the garden becomes a sandbox for the funny researchers, the kitchen looks after each meal like after a bomb hit - and then comes this magical moment when four tired warriors find their way trustfully onto the sofa, cuddle up close to their favorite person, show their pink puppy bellies and disappear into the land of dreams within seconds. Our foster families do incredible work and give up so much to support the animal welfare workers on site, but such moments definitely make a lot of things good again ... In a few weeks, the four snuggle balls will reach the legally required age that allows them to leave Spain with their stylish new passports. Nena, Indira, Gandalf and Neno are now looking for humorous people who can explain the world to them - what you need to know and be able to do as a family dog. They are very modest, because the main concern of these lively solo performers is simply: It has to be fun! - well, and of course they want to be loved unconditionally, but who could resist these cute little rugrats?

About Gandalf

What life with Gandalf looks like

Gandalf is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gandalf, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gandalf?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gandalf on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gandalf if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gandalf already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gandalf isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gandalf and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
