Adopt Ghiro

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

By the end of April 2024, there was an urgent appeal for help from Guspini (in the southwestern part of Sardinia). A kind woman lived there in very simple conditions with her 17 dogs ... There were fewer at times, but since the woman could not afford to have her dogs neutered, they kept multiplying ... and she did not want to part with any of the dogs. But then there was no other choice, because the woman, who was only 55 years old, had been diagnosed with cancer, and it had reached the terminal stage. She had gone to the hospital, and her animals were temporarily cared for by neighbors, but it was clear that their mistress would not return. She then asked that her dogs not be taken to a shelter, but that perhaps there might be a chance to place them in good homes ... Solutions were sought, and a few dogs could be accommodated. For the remaining nine dogs, Paola and Pierpaolo offered help. So on April 29, 2024, nine dogs began their journey to the Rifugio in Stintino. The woman had still learned that her dogs would be cared for. On May 5, 2024, she passed away in peace. All the dogs had to be treated for parasites after their arrival. They had already been microchipped and registered, and they would also be neutered. For the dogs, it was of course not easy to suddenly lose their home and no longer have all their doggy friends around. They handle it very differently, with some finding it particularly difficult. During our team tour in mid-April 2025, we got to know one of the dogs from this group again: Ghiro. Ghiro is friendly and curious, but the many strangers somewhat irritate him. In the rescue, he only sees Paola and Pierpaolo, with whom he is now very familiar. Ghiro needs some time and patience at the beginning. But we are sure that he will relax once he is in a family environment. We want to give Ghiro the chance of a real home and bring him to Germany as soon as possible. Would you like to give Ghiro a home with a close family connection so he can enjoy a happy dog life? August 29, 2025: Ghiro was allowed to travel to his German foster home. If you are currently looking for a new furry family member and are aware that adoption means not only joy but also work and great responsibility, we look forward to your message. We provide nationwide support.

So gingen also am 29. About Ghiro

What life with Ghiro looks like

Ghiro is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ProTier e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ghiro, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ghiro?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ProTier e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ghiro on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ghiro if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ProTier e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ghiro already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ghiro isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ProTier e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ghiro and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
