Adopt Gilda

Female · Adult · 4 years

Her name is that of a heroine from a classic film with Rita Hayworth and there's something in that. The filmic Gilda was beautiful, strong and, although wounded by life, still believing in true love, trusting and seeking safety. Our Gilda also has a difficult history, evident in her worn teeth and matted coat when she arrived at the animal shelter. Despite everything, she has retained great sensitivity and joy for life. Gilda is estimated to be around 4 years old. She is a female German Shepherd. We are still discovering the range of her behaviors, but we already know that she exhibits many typical traits of the breed. Wise, open to learning, alert, and confident. People are very important to her. On walks, she walks nicely on a leash, sometimes stepping under people's legs with excitement and rubbing against volunteers as if wanting to be as close as possible. She really enjoys going out, responds to voices, and seeks contact. Using her innate hunting instinct, she can sometimes pull towards smaller dogs. Squirrels on Paluch won't have an easy time with her. In relationships with other dogs, she behaves differently, still finding her way in a new place. Most she passes calmly, but on some she barks from a distance, so she may need a calm, aware handler and work on relationships. As befits a German Shepherd, the future caregiver should also be prepared for the possibility of future orthopedic issues. Gilda will repay love and devotion if only given her chance. We are looking for a home for her where the tension from the past finally fades, and what remains is what is most important - a relationship that doesn't need any truly cinematic or dramatic twists.

Mimo wszystkiego zachowała w sobie ogromną czułość i radość życia. Gilda oceniana jest na ok 4 lata. To sunia w typie owczarka niemieckiego.

About Gilda

What life with Gilda looks like

Gilda is a large adult dog waiting at Schronisko Na Paluchu in Warsaw.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: May need orthopedic monitoring due to breed predisposition; requires work on dog socialization

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gilda, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gilda?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Na Paluchu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gilda on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gilda if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Na Paluchu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gilda already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gilda isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Na Paluchu early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gilda and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
