Adopt Giovanni

Male · Puppy

Giovanni was dropped off at our animal shelter in very poor physical condition at the end of February 2026. He was severely emaciated. Since then, he has gained weight well, developed muscle, and blossomed. Giovanni had previously lived closely with his owner, was house-trained, and knew basic commands. The large male dog loves his walks and also enjoys going into the water. Up until now, he has lived in a rural area and we see him continuing to thrive in a more quiet environment. Giovanni is generally open and friendly, very clingy, and needs a lot of closeness with his primary caregiver. He is eager to learn, attentive, and very enthusiastic about food. Therefore, the shelter routine does not suit him, and he shows nervousness and under-stimulation in the run. Outside of the shelter, he immediately becomes calmer, more relaxed, and enjoys the attention and mental stimulation with his walk companions. For his future, an earth-level home is relevant, as well as building and maintaining a healthy musculature, since he has a pronounced HD and lumbar-sacral transitional vertebrae. Currently, he receives pain medication for support. Giovannis health should continue to be monitored by a veterinarian and physiotherapist. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

About Giovanni

What life with Giovanni looks like

Giovanni is a puppy/kitten dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Gütersloh in Gütersloh.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Giovanni, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Giovanni?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Gütersloh handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Giovanni on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Giovanni if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Gütersloh will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Giovanni already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Giovanni isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Gütersloh early rather than rehoming privately; they know Giovanni and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
