Gipsy

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 7 years

With a heavy heart, I’m looking for a new, permanent home for my degu lady Gipsy (female, born April 26, 2019) within an existing degu group. She recently lost her partner and therefore absolutely must not be left alone—she needs to find suitable companionship again. Unfortunately, due to personal reasons, I can no longer provide her with the care and socialization she now needs and deserves to the extent she requires. That’s why I’m giving her away—with the clear wish that she’ll go to good, responsible hands. About Gipsy: Gipsy is gray, very calm, and rather shy. She’s used to being handled and will take treats from your hand, but she doesn’t particularly like being touched. And yes: she does occasionally respond to her name—when she feels especially “up for it.” As a special feature, she has a partially amputated tail tip (which unfortunately happened during a dental check-up at the vet). What also makes her character unique is that she reacts to music. We’ve observed several times that as soon as music starts playing, she lies down at the front of her cage—as if she’s “listening.” As soon as the music stops, she immediately returns to her normal degu routine. I’d like to give her away for a small adoption fee and would like to arrange the handover in a clean and binding manner. A running wheel and a transport box can be included. Location: 74379 Ingersheim (near Ludwigsburg). We can bring Gipsy to her new home within about 100 km, by arrangement. Alternatively, we can meet halfway or drive toward each other if that works better. We’d also really appreciate receiving a brief update once she’s settled into her new home and how she’s adjusting. I’d be glad if she didn’t have to stay alone for too long.

About Gipsy

What life with Gipsy looks like

Gipsy is a adult mixed breed animal waiting at Deguhilfe Süd e.V. in Obermichelbach.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Gipsy far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gipsy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gipsy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Deguhilfe Süd e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gipsy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gipsy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Deguhilfe Süd e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gipsy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gipsy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Deguhilfe Süd e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gipsy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
