Gisela & Leopold

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 12 years

Gisela & Leopold – two small seniors and characterful individuals who deserve a gentle new start. The Chihuahuas Gisela and Leopold, born around 2014, came to us because their owner could no longer keep them and is in need of help herself. For the two small seniors, this was a big change - and at the same time, a chance to start over. Their wish: a home that offers peace, understanding, and reliable structures. Preferably together, as they are an experienced team. When they arrived, both were clearly unsettled. A new environment, new people, new routines - that's a lot for a small Chihuahua to process. Leopold is the more cautious of the two. He observes from a distance for a long time, approaches slowly, and only opens up once he has developed real trust. Gisela is bolder: after a short period of adjustment, she comes out of her shell, actively seeks contact, enjoys being addressed, and likes to be petted - naturally at her own pace. Both make continuous progress with calm, consistent caretakers. Things that were initially difficult - such as putting on the leash or care routines like cleaning the eyes - now happen reliably and without much drama. Gisela and Leopold are sensitive to sudden or unwanted touches. If something happens too quickly or demands too much, a snap may occur. With increasing confidence, this behavior becomes significantly less - still, their owners should have experience with small, strong-willed dogs. Our duo probably never learned the basics of small dog behavior properly. They are genuine, unconventional, charming, and simply themselves. Gisela and Leopold arrived significantly overweight and not in the best condition. They are currently on a diet - with initial successes. Both are vaccinated and microchipped. Leopold is neutered. As Chihuahuas, Gisela and Leopold belong to breeds affected by pedigree breeding; both show a form of brachycephaly (short-headedness). Especially with Gisela, breathing sounds are clearly audible, which requires a responsible environment, adapted stress, and a lot of sensitivity. We wish for them a quiet home without small children, people who have patience, empathy, and structure, an environment that accepts them as they are - with senior charm, learning potential, and their own mind. Whoever gets involved with this pair gains two little personalities who enrich every day with their mix of seriousness, humor, and loyalty. DE·Show original

About Gisela & Leopold

What life with Gisela & Leopold looks like

Gisela & Leopold is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel in Brandenburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gisela & Leopold, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gisela & Leopold?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gisela & Leopold on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gisela & Leopold if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gisela & Leopold already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gisela & Leopold isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gisela & Leopold and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
