Gismo

Male · Adult · 8 years

Gismo Rasse Staff-Mix Gender Male, neutered Born 12.2020 Im animal shelter since 12.2020 Gismo has unfortunately spent the majority of his life with us in the animal shelter. He was born in the animal shelter to a very nice Staff-Mix female dog and was rehomed as a puppy. At the age of nearly two years, he returned to the animal shelter because problems had arisen with his owner. Through incorrect treatment, upbringing, and mental stimulation, Gismo has developed a not easily controllable prey-catching behavior. Gismo reacts strongly to all kinds of movement stimuli – this can also be a swinging bag, a scarf, or something similar. We suspect that this behavior was caused by a lack of knowledge or unconscious continuous, uncontrolled ball-throwing. The sad part of the story is that Gismo is actually a very social, people-oriented dog who enjoys extensive cuddles with his trusted people and can relax well during this. On walks, he runs very well on the leash and has few problems with fellow animals. Gismo is generally compatible with both female and male dogs; in the animal shelter, he often (with a muzzle) runs in dog groups, which clearly brings him joy. However, his fellow animals should be able to show him when they are done playing and no more roughhousing is appropriate. Gismo had a knee operation a few years ago, which went well. As arthritis has started to become noticeable in his age, he receives a physiotherapy treatment in the animal shelter every few weeks. This does him good and has so far spared him further treatments and medications. We are looking for people with a lot of experience – preferably with Staffs and similar breeds – who have the necessary “standing” and are not afraid of the required effort to train out his silly prey drive. Of course, groundwork has already been done at the animal shelter in cooperation with our cooperative dog training classes, but more can certainly be achieved in a patient, consistent home. At the beginning, a lot of work with the muzzle will be necessary. Attending a good dog training class and/or being accompanied by a dog trainer is assumed by us. Gismo is not rehomed to children, cats, or small animals. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please write us a mail and share a few things that are interesting for a dog placement: dog experiences; living situation; are there children and/or other animals in the household; how long must the dog be left alone during the day. Please provide a telephone number for follow-up questions.

About Gismo

What life with Gismo looks like

Gismo is a adult dog waiting at Ria-Nickel-Tierheim Homburg in Homburg/Saar.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gismo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gismo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ria-Nickel-Tierheim Homburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gismo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gismo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ria-Nickel-Tierheim Homburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gismo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gismo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ria-Nickel-Tierheim Homburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gismo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
