Gitana

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 13 months

In Huelva, a little whirlwind is waiting to sweep through your home! Gitana came into the care of our friends in March 2022. She had been observed by locals near her location for months, suggesting that this extremely funny dachshund mix was born on the street. Often, wild-born dogs are reserved around people, but Gitana apparently never got that memo. The 13-month-old (as of July 2022) princess loves being picked up and even rocked like a baby. The animal welfare workers in Huelva rarely resist picking up this funny little troublemaker, because Gitana is known for the wonderful contented sounds she makes when she can snuggle with one of her two-legged friends. But the arms of her rescuers serve not only as a refuge for the little comedian, but also as a vantage point. Our friends laugh at the "part-time cat" they have in their animal shelter, because this pretty young girl never wants to be on the ground. Her favorite game is "Lava!" and so she jumps and climbs from doghouse to chair, from cardboard box to windowsill. After all, it's important for an attentive guardian of the entire animal shelter to never lose sight of everything. Gitan is an uncomplicated, fun, and lovable creature. At 8kg and a size that barely qualifies as "knee-high," this mobile plaything has a very practical packaging. Too small to be run over by her, but clearly large enough to not be overlooked constantly. Gitana is a textbook example of a livewire with enormous qualities when it comes to cuddling and loving. In winter, you won't need to worry about your hot water bottle, because Gitana can stay on your lap for hours. If you're looking for the perfect mix of bouncy dog and couch cushion, if you have a sense of humor, and literally open arms for the chocolate-colored treat from Andalusia, then get in touch with us - and we'll tell you how our cheerful sunbeam can soon brighten your life.

About Gitana

What life with Gitana looks like

Gitana is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gitana, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gitana?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gitana on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gitana if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gitana already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gitana isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gitana and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
