Grillo

Mixed Breed · Female

Grillo was handed over to us by the police, taken in by a woman whose son had simply left the dog with her and had not adequately cared for him. She was simply overwhelmed, had no experience with pets, and over the following weeks passed Grillo on to us. Grillo lives with a female dog here. He is playfully typical for his age and very willing to learn. He quickly understood retrieving, loves ball games. He enjoys going for walks, even with children, but the parents should responsibly handle living with a dog; he is sometimes a bit rambunctious, and more work is needed on his training and education. The leash control should also be strengthened, as well as all other aspects of life that belong to a well-mannered dog. He gets along well with other dogs, and his social behavior can be further developed in a mixed group of dogs. He tends to bark a lot when he sees other dogs, but he is rather insecure, so he should be guided with consistency and love. He can probably be accustomed to other animals, but some nerves should be accounted for. Grillo wants an active home where he can continue to be trained and worked with, so he doesn't get into trouble. He would like to go out as a second dog, but this is not a requirement. A house with a garden would be great, but Grillo can also be rehomed in an apartment if he has enough exercise. He is clingy and affectionate, and Grillo is certainly suitable as a beginner dog, provided there is willingness to learn the basics of dog ownership together. This is a young, adolescent dog. This cat is to be kept indoors only.

About Grillo

What life with Grillo looks like

Grillo is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Grillo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Grillo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Grillo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Grillo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Grillo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Grillo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Grillo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
