Adopt Gustave

American Staffordshire Terrier · Male · Senior · 9 years

Gustave is part of the seizure by authorities of the 15 Yugoslav shepherds. He was the only American Staff in the group. When he arrived, he was not as fearful as some other dogs from the seizure by authorities, but he remained clearly uncomfortable in certain situations. Given the living conditions on site, his past unfortunately does not bode well. When arriving at the shelter, Gustave had to be urgently neutered due to a suspicion of tumor in the anal glands. He was then adopted, but is now back at the shelter due to a bad relationship with the cat and dog in the home, as well as several episodes of redirection. The presence of the cat was particularly difficult for him: he became very frustrated and, unable to reach the cat, redirected his tension towards the family dog. The scene was impressive for his adopters, especially since he redirected towards them in this context of emotional overload. After this incident, Gustave adopted a fearful attitude, as if he feared being hit, which suggests possible painful after-effects from his past. In daily life, Gustave is a calm, kind dog and especially very attached to humans. He is a real clingy dog, constantly seeking attention, contact and cuddles. He will be able to form a very strong and sincere relationship with his humans. He can bark from time to time, but it remains generally moderate. However, when he is in a situation of frustration or emotional overload, his reactions can be disproportionate. He can also be very "persistent" when he has an idea in mind. Therefore, a supporting work will be necessary to help him better manage his emotions and channel them.

About Gustave

What life with Gustave looks like

Gustave is a senior american staffordshire terrier dog waiting at Perwez) in Sans Collier.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gustave, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gustave?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Perwez) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gustave on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gustave if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Perwez) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gustave already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gustave isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Perwez) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gustave and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
