Adopt Gusto

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 12 years

Gusto could not be rehomed together with Ferdi, yet as a second dog to one of our former rescue, Border Collie Anton in May 2015 to Zschadraß, we are happy for the boy... ————————————————————————————- My name is Gusto and I was taken over by a friendly association, now I have been waiting since August 2014 for a new home. This is what my caregivers say about me: Initially, Gusto was quite shy, but he soon gained trust and is now almost overwhelmingly excited when someone comes near him. He loves going for walks, loves fellow animals and tends to be more submissive. Gusto should go to a family that would like to work on his training, he is suitable for any dog sport and is typically enthusiastic. Since he likes being in the company of other dogs, he would be an ideal second dog. Gusto would need to get used to city life, he is unsure and needs people by his side who can give him security and show him that traffic is not something bad. With his quick understanding, this will surely happen quickly. The same goes for car rides. Otherwise, he has many good qualities, he is house-trained, playful, affectionate, shows no aggression even when anxious and for understanding children, who are patient at first, he has become a favorite among the dog walkers. Being alone is easier for him with fellow animals, but with appropriate training he can quickly learn to be alone. Since he is still young, he has some whims in his head, but that's normal and should be considered as such. Gusto can be rehomed to beginners who then would like to attend a dog school, as well as to a family with children or also as an ideal second dog. Suitable for apartment living is no problem, a house with a garden would certainly be even better for the young dog.

About Gusto

What life with Gusto looks like

Gusto is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gusto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gusto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gusto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gusto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gusto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gusto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gusto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
