Gyros

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Gyros is a charming mixed-breed dog from Greece with a big heart and an even bigger need for movement. Our dear four-legged friend is active, adventurous, and highly attentive—a true explorer who loves discovering the world together with his people. Gyros is smart, eager to learn, and cuddly; he adores closeness and bonding and will stand by his humans with a loyal heart. At first, he may be reserved, but once he’s gained trust, he reveals his loving and playful side. He comes with certain requirements: Gyros has a strong prey drive, is alert, and needs both physical and mental stimulation. Mental work, training, and obedience school are therefore essential to keep him happy. He may have some shepherd-dog ancestry, which could manifest in pronounced territorial behavior—he needs clear structures and experienced owners who can provide him with security. Driving in the car isn’t a problem for him, but he does need a bit of support and a muzzle at the vet, as he tends to react very anxiously there. Gyros thrives best in a rural environment without other pets. Given his reactions to other dogs, joggers, and cyclists, a calm and quiet setting is ideal. If you’re looking for a smart, loving, yet demanding companion who’ll share adventures with you, master training sessions together, and then snuggle up close and relax by your side—then Gyros, our Greek mixed-breed pup, is the perfect dog for you.

DE·Show original

About Gyros

What life with Gyros looks like

Gyros is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim beider Basel in Basel.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gyros, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gyros?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim beider Basel handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gyros on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gyros if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim beider Basel will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gyros already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gyros isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim beider Basel early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gyros and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
