Hačiko

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 14 years

At the request of the authorities, on June 19, 2026, we took in a senior dog who is approximately 14 years old. He arrived in poor health, suffering from severe diabetes and several other complications, including liver issues. We don’t wish to speculate about what happened before. In cases like this, reality is often more complex than it appears from the outside. Our job isn’t to find fault; rather, it’s to provide care where it’s needed—and that’s exactly what he’s getting right now. He’s under regular veterinary supervision, receiving appropriate treatment, and we closely monitor his condition, weight, and overall well-being. The veterinarian not only examines him at the clinic but also visits him directly here at the shelter. And most importantly: he’s eating well, going for walks, is sweet and cheerful, and is steadily gaining weight. That’s wonderful news for us. Because a sick and elderly body won’t get better with a wave of a magic wand—it needs time, peace, medical treatment, and daily care. In recent days, information has surfaced online claiming that the dog was taken to a shelter and is slowly dying there. We’d like to state clearly: he’s ill, but he’s not left without help. He’s old, but he’s not being ignored. He’s safe and receiving the care he needs. Please keep your fingers crossed for him—every single day he feels better is worth it. We’re so glad that so many people care about Hačik’s fate. However, by calling us for information, you’re preventing others—who need to place an animal with us—from reaching us, and we can’t focus on our operational matters. Therefore, we’re providing here the information you ask about most frequently, along with one important point we’d like to highlight. What seems most crucial to us is that someone is pretending to be us, claiming to be a shelter employee, and making up stories about Hačik. Our primary information channels are our website and official social media profiles, where we share updates on what’s happening here. You can find the people authorized to act on our behalf on our website, including a description of their responsibilities. There, you’ll also find our phone numbers and official emails that we use. If someone claiming to be one of our employees contacts you, please verify that they really are who they say they are. The authorities approached us regarding the placement of the seized dog; they’re handling the entire process, and we don’t know the details of the case. Likewise, we can’t disclose any information we have that’s part of the ongoing proceedings. To protect individuals’ privacy, we won’t even reveal which veterinarians are caring for Hačik, as some people have been calling vets in the area and asking questions—which we simply don’t understand. Of course, the authorities have all the information they need about everything related to Hačik... What’s essential for us—and hopefully for you—is that Hačik is now receiving insulin, is fed several times a day, and is steadily gaining weight. He’s already familiarized himself with the shelter environment and all the caregivers, and he’s under veterinary supervision. We’ve had experience dealing with diabetic dogs in this condition before. Of course, anything could happen at any time, but the fact that he’s gaining weight is a positive sign. It’s not possible to visit Hačik; doing so wouldn’t help him at all—he needs a stable routine, and our caregivers are providing exactly that. That’s all we can tell you right now. Please don’t block our phone lines—we really need them open for handling operational matters. Thank you so much for your understanding.

A přesně tu teď dostává. Potřebuje čas, klid, léčbu a každodenní péči. Není možné Hačika navštěvovat, nijak by mu to nepomohlo, potřebuje mít stabilní režim a naši ošetřovatelé mu ho poskytují. Tohle je vše, co můžeme říct. Prosím, neblokujte nám telefonní linky, opravdu je potřebujeme mít volné pro řešení provozních věcí. Děkujeme moc za pochopení.

About Hačiko

What life with Hačiko looks like

Hačiko is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Pet Heroes Lanškroun in Lanškroun.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇨🇿Adopting from Czech Republic

Czech shelters (útulky) include sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID. The adopter signs a written contract (smlouva) — the shelter may follow up to verify wellbeing.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hačiko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hačiko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pet Heroes Lanškroun handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hačiko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hačiko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pet Heroes Lanškroun will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hačiko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hačiko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pet Heroes Lanškroun early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hačiko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (CS). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
