Harry

Dachshund · Unknown · Adult · 5 years

Harry – South Wales Standard, Wire Haired 5 year old male Neutered Harry is a beautiful boy who is now searching for a new forever home. Indoors, Harry is a delight. He is loving and enjoys being close to his people, he is non‑destructive and settles well on his own. He sleeps independently without issue, can be left for up to four hours, and travels calmly in the car. Harry is friendly with people and with dogs he already knows, and he has previously lived with another dog. He also gets on well with family dogs, though slow and careful introductions will be essential. Harry is being re‑surrendered after an incident in which he slipped his lead and bit another dog outside of the home. Because of this, he will need an adopter who is confident, patient, and committed to working with him using positive, reward‑based methods. He is not suited to busy environments such as cafés or pubs, as these situations can be overwhelming for him. We will provide ongoing behaviour support to help his new family continue his training Harry’s ideal home would include a large, secure garden where he can explore safely without the stress of encountering unfamiliar dogs. He would be best suited to adults or families with children aged 12 and over. He could potentially live with another dog, provided introductions are slow, structured, and carefully managed. Someone who understands his needs and is willing to continue working on his reactivity will help Harry thrive. Despite his challenges outdoors, Harry is a loyal, affectionate companion who will shine in the right environment. About Harry

What life with Harry looks like

Harry is a large adult dachshund dog waiting at The Red Foundation in Pentlow Street.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Harry, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Harry?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Red Foundation handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Harry on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Harry if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Red Foundation will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Harry already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Harry isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Red Foundation early rather than rehoming privately; they know Harry and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
