Adopt Winston

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Male · Young · 2 years

Winston – Rotherham 2years 10months Male Dachshund cross Staffy, Brindle Smooth Coat. Not Neutered Adoption fee £400 You might look at Winston and think, “that’s an unusual looking dachshund.” You would be right. He is a truly unique mix of a long dachshund body and a gorgeous, wide Staffordshire Bull Terrier face. To us, he is absolutely perfect just the way he is. But beneath that handsome, striking exterior is a sensitive soul who has already known far too much heartbreak in his short life. At not even three years old, Winston found himself facing the ultimate injustice through no fault of his own. Following an incident in his previous home where he felt the need to defend himself, he bit a child and was tragically scheduled to be euthanised. We refused to let his story end there. Stepping in urgently, The Red Foundation brought him into our family, determined to give him the second chance and the forever love he so desperately deserves. Because of his past, Winston carries some emotional scars. He is a very nervous boy who is easily overwhelmed by the world around him. In the short time he has been with us, we have seen just how deeply he relies on the company of other dogs to build his confidence. When he gets over-excited, he can display some humping behaviours, but we know this stems from anxiety and overstimulation. He truly needs a calm, adult-only home with a steady, patient resident dog who can show him the ropes, offer reassurance, and help this shy boy finally step out of his shadow. Winston may not be the flawless, easy companion everyone thinks they want, but he is the companion who needs love the most. He has a reservoir of untapped potential just waiting for the right person to unlock it. You will never be alone in this journey either; The Red Foundation will provide full, ongoing behavioural support to ensure Winston thrives. If you have a quiet home and a big heart, you could be the person who changes Winston’s world forever. About Winston

What life with Winston looks like

Winston is a large young adult staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at The Red Foundation in Pentlow Street.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Winston, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Winston?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Red Foundation handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Winston on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Winston if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Red Foundation will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Winston already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Winston isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Red Foundation early rather than rehoming privately; they know Winston and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
