Harry

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Harry looks like a cream puff—and has a sweet core to match! His extraordinary amber eyes captivate everyone, looking deep into the soul and hinting at his past. He was rescued together with Victor and Fanta from poor husbandry, and if you know how long it takes for the police to intervene in Southern Europe, you might not want to ask too many questions about what the three gentlemen endured in their former home. Currently, Harry lives on a piece of land in a park with his buddies, who might even be his littermates, cared for by the animal welfare organization Mastin en la calle. There, the trio can wait in safety until they find their fans. Harry is a quiet, initially somewhat shy male dog who longs for trust and affection. Once he builds trust, he enjoys the company of people very much. At three and a half years old, Harry is also a young dog who, in the right environment, might use his sharp mind to cause some mischief and draw attention. Harry is a neutered, vaccinated, and healthy mixed breed, born in July 2022, approximately 71 cm tall, and weighing 30 kg. Though large and light, he cannot deny his running dog heritage, but we suspect that some herding dog genes might also be in his mix. Our charming gentleman gets along well with other dogs, is leash-friendly, and shows great obedience and elegance. Harry has no experience with children or cats. For the reserved male dog, we would prefer a quiet home—large children who allow him his quiet moments and understand that he values peace are not a problem. For Harry, we wish for a home with a garden, so he can simply be a dog outside. Harry likes to lie in the grass and watch the clouds, and he doesn’t need to be constantly entertained. Another dog in the house would not bother Harry, but he is also open to a career as a lone prince. Walks well on a leash.

DE·Show original

About Harry

What life with Harry looks like

Harry is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Harry, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Harry?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Harry on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Harry if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Harry already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Harry isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Harry and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
