Adopt Balu

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 5 years

We are looking for… ❤ a loving home for our "little Balu-bear" ❤ Name/Breed: Balu/ German Shepherd-Ridgeback mixed breed Location: animal shelter in 38895 Derenburg Shoulder height: approx. 68 cm Age/Weight: almost 5 years old / approx. 48 kg Balu is a wonderful male dog who has been at the animal shelter since February 2025 due to an administrative seizure. On walks, he is very attentive but relaxed and shows great loyalty to his trusted people after a short time. He is initially somewhat reserved around strangers and needs some time to build trust. But with the right affection, he will open his heart quickly – it’s important to take the time to get to know him over several visits. Balu is a dog with a big heart – funny, cuddly, and very grateful for every bit of attention. Based on our experiences so far, he generally gets along with other dogs outside the shelter and shows neutral behavior in many situations. Balu knows the common basic commands and remains calm around cyclists and joggers. On the leash, he walks relaxed, and his recall is already very good. His new owner will be greeted by a generous cuddle buddy who is ready to settle in. Balu wants to share his life with people who set clear, loving boundaries and provide him with guidance. Important to know: Balu was classified as a "dangerous dog" in Saxony-Anhalt following a biting incident with another dog, which requires a specialist certificate and behavioral assessment before he can be rehomed. Prospective adopters from other federal states should inform themselves in advance about the respective keeping conditions in their communities. If you would like to give a special male dog like Balu a chance, have the necessary knowledge about dogs, live in a rural area, and are physically capable of handling him, we look forward to hearing from you. If interested, please contact H. Boron via mobile number .

About Balu

What life with Balu looks like

Balu is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierschutzzentrum Ribbesbüttel in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzzentrum Ribbesbüttel handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzzentrum Ribbesbüttel will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzzentrum Ribbesbüttel early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
