Heinzi

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

He was finally rehomed into his new family on 02.04.2017. He is allowed to go to work with his new owner and delights all the residents of the nursing home. He is otherwise a family favorite and gets along well with the children; only a little more work is still needed on his big snout. We are very happy that our Heinzemann has found a nice home! ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. My name is Heinzemann. I am male, neutered and born in 2016. I have been waiting for a new home since November 2016. I am about 30 cm tall. This is what my caretakers say about me: Heinzemann is a stray dog who was tied up and abandoned in the Grimmaer Stadtwald on a rainy and cold autumn night. One of our staff members found him in the morning on the way to the animal shelter, pitifully whimpering and shivering. Not only that, but his back fur was also light and clearly eaten away by mites. To relieve the itching, Heinzemann even injured himself. He was treated immediately and regularly washed with a special shampoo. It was actually a minor issue that could have been quickly stopped if the previous owner had cared. He didn't have to wait until flakes and open spots affected the little dog so much. But anyone who ties their dog up at night next to a tree probably doesn't care either. He is now recovered, and during the winter months and later occasionally a flea treatment should be administered regularly, then this should never happen again. He shines and takes care of himself, which makes us very happy. We are looking for an active home where he can learn what else belongs to basic dog training while being alone. With Heinzemann there will surely be lots of fun, cuddling should not be neglected. He should attend dog training classes with his owners to be able to play with other dogs. With appropriate exercise and stimulation, the focus should rather be on basic obedience and nose work. He can be rehomed as a second dog, and with some patience and practice he can also be well socialized with other animals. Heinzemann is currently in a teenage phase, but remains rather a small rascal and can be easily motivated to behave better. He finds new fellow animals quickly, if the first loud and grumpy situation is overcome. He lives in a group of males, one of whom shares his dog bed with Heinzemann every night. Heinzemann is compatible, typical of his breed alert, but not a barker. Car trips are no problem, he likes to join in. He likes people and everything, in short, a cozy funny type. With a little training, he can become a dream dog, everything depends on the new owner. Character-wise, he has the best prerequisites. Our Heinzemann is suitable as a beginner's dog, he can be rehomed into a family with children. A house with a garden would be nice, but it is not a requirement with appropriate stimulation. Who wants to prove to our Heinzemann that trips into the forest will never mean that he is simply left behind...??? The descriptions are impressions and recordings of the animal in our animal shelter and our foster homes. Each animal can develop differently in the new home.

About Heinzi

What life with Heinzi looks like

Heinzi is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Heinzi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Heinzi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Heinzi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Heinzi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Heinzi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Heinzi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Heinzi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
