Hektor

Male · Adult · 7 years

Hektor is losing hope at the animal shelter since he was a young, cheerful puppy. He came to us in 2022 as a nice 3-year-old. Oh, such a quick home find. As you can see, not necessarily. He was a beautiful, cheerful, smart, walker, ball, and water lover - in any order. And you know what? Somehow nothing has changed. For 4 years he still has the same huge belief that his fate will change, the same hope for a walk and joy of fetching balls and water baths. That puppy-like faith in the world and people is still in him. The question is how much longer he will be able to. How to convince you to meet a dog that no one noticed for 4 years. Hektor loves walks, and everyone who wants to give him a chance to escape from the concrete box. He loves everything related to a shared bath in fields and forests. So driving in a car, running, tracking in the grass, chasing a ball, baths in puddles, streams, rivers, lakes, sea... we haven't checked the sea yet, but I assume that at the sight of waves he would go crazy with happiness. In the city, very interested in everything, indifferent to noises, curious about every wall. Does he pull on the leash? Which dog from the animal shelter doesn't pull, obviously not perfect, but it can be managed. I assume that with regular walks and a smart owner, he will catch on to the leash culture once or twice. With other dogs, it varies, depending on temperament, but he is rather a loner, doesn't look for a fight, nor does he seek contact, but we suggest him as a single. Hektor in contact with people is friendly but distant. I think that in a home environment, he would open up nicely to pets, but for now, you have to accept that you will be second place right after his beloved ball. There is no daily chance to build a relationship, just like a proper walk - he lacks both, so if you have time and desire, come for a meeting because Hektor has already begun to doubt whether he will ever leave the animal shelter. Sad, he waits by the fence with a ball in his mouth, but he doesn't demand attention at all costs. But when he gets a chance to get out of the concrete box even for a short time - believe me, I don't know many dogs that appreciate every minute of a walk and take joy from every moment outside the bars. By the way, the years spent in concrete walls have affected his joints. He is no longer suitable for running up and down apartment buildings or long trips - he needs more controlled walks and supplements - besides that, he copes well and clearly pushes aside his problems. If you have a house with a nice yard, an apartment on the ground floor - Hektorek will beautifully thank you for the warm bed and his ball. And a leash in the hand of someone who loves him. Doesn't ask for much, right? Did it hit your heart harder?

polski English Deutsch Hektor - marnieje w schronisku odkąd był młodym wesołym pieskiem. Trafił do nas w 2022 jako fajny 3-latek. Ech takie to zaraz dom znajdują. I smyczkę w ręku kogoś kto go kocha. O niewiele chyba prosi prawda? Zabiło mocniej serce? About Hektor

What life with Hektor looks like

Hektor is a large adult dog waiting at Schronisko Choszczno in Poland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hektor, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hektor?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Choszczno handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hektor on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hektor if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Choszczno will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hektor already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hektor isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Choszczno early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hektor and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
