Herceg

Mixed Breed · Unknown · 3 years

A owner gave up (they said they found him in the 13th district on Raktár street) Herceg, although not the most photogenic, actually a beautiful dog. His elegant appearance, special color and cute, slightly sad eyes immediately catch people's attention. He was given to us by his own owner, although he first denied that he was his, but the chip clearly proved that he belonged to him. When he entered the shelter, he was very frightened by the kennel: he often trembled, was afraid and got scared when left alone. However, when someone is beside him, he completely relaxes. He asks for a belly rub, jumps around, and it's clear how much he needs love. He can walk in two ways currently: either he doesn't pull at all and walks nicely, slowly by the leg, or he suddenly shoots off like a cannonball, there is unfortunately no transition yet.

About Herceg

What life with Herceg looks like

Herceg is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Rex Kutyaotthon in Budapest.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Anxiety issues, needs patient owner for confidence building

🇭🇺Adopting from Hungary

Hungarian shelters operate at high capacity given the country's stray population. Animals leave sterilized, chipped, and with a passport. Many shelters coordinate transport to Germany, Austria, and the Nordics.

Frequently asked

Adopting Herceg, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Herceg?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rex Kutyaotthon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Herceg on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Herceg if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Rex Kutyaotthon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Herceg already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Herceg isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rex Kutyaotthon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Herceg and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HU). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
