Hermes

Male · Senior · 13 years

Looking for a home for Hermes. This time, one that's forever - for better or worse. After all, his story must have a happy ending. Hermes is about a 40 kg large dog, with a wonderful character. He hasn't had much luck in life - in June 2022 he ended up in the Choszczno animal shelter after 7 years of life on a chain. 2024 - New Year - started at home. Unfortunately, after some time it turned out that the owner's life situation changed and she would no longer be able to take care of Hermes. In April, the guy came back to us. It's not easy for him - he misses the sofa, but above all the freedom and regular walks. He is very happy when that time of the week comes when we come to his pen with a leash and he jumps like a joyful lamb and as soon as the gate opens, he dashes through the small paddock to the gate. As quickly as possible, just already, and for good. He is a very curious dog, loving to explore the area. He really likes places where he can quietly sniff in the bushes, the center, crowds of people and lots of loud cars are definitely not his fairy tale - although if needed, he can survive in such conditions. He adores eating, really - every tasty treat and any food is worth gold to him. You have to be careful with hands because when excited, he can grab a snack strongly. Ah, and it's worth being careful during walks, because he's a garbage can on four legs. Similarly to food, he loves human company - but best with those he trusts. He doesn't like when strangers push their hands towards him, he prefers to build relationships at his own pace. But once he gets to know you, he shows how sweet he is - he folds his large body like a stool, just to fit next to a person. He puts his paws on our knees and nuzzles his little nose into us - which he can also use to demand affection. At home, he learned to be alone and go outside. He has problems with car trips - sometimes he ends up vomiting. He would be happiest as an only dog, but we can try to introduce him to a nice female dog. It's possible that with a good introduction, he would also accept cats, because he doesn't react to them outside. He is about 9 years old, although he still has puppy-like energy at times. He is castrated and vaccinated, has a chip. He is waiting for that one, written for him home, in the animal shelter in Choszczno.

Hermuś to około 40 kilogramowy pies, a właściwie wielkopies, o cudownym charakterze. Codziennie w godzinach . About Hermes

What life with Hermes looks like

Hermes is a large senior dog waiting at Schronisko Choszczno in Poland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hermes, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hermes?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Choszczno handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hermes on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hermes if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Choszczno will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hermes already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hermes isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Choszczno early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hermes and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
