Adopt Homie

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Homie was rehomed for several years but was returned to the animal shelter due to overexertion. He is a male dog who wants everything to be to his exact specifications, which of course is not possible and should not be in Homie’s spirit. For him to live a much more relaxed life, he needs to learn to take responsibility and also know how to step back. Homie walks well on a leash, gets along well with his fellow animals on walks, is house-trained, and can stay alone for a few hours. He is more used to going by bus or train than by car. Homie cannot be rehomed with beginner dog owners or into a household with children. Although he may appear sweet and uncomplicated at first glance, he is not. He needs to learn and respect rules and structure, which were not consistently enforced in his last home. So, Homie defends resources like food or toys and could potentially use his teeth. That’s why he has learned to wear a muzzle here so that he doesn’t win in such situations, but a human can show him that he sets the direction. The path to this will likely be longer, as Homie has always gotten through with his stubbornness by threatening and doing what he wanted. Homie is unbelievably smart—he needs mental stimulation and a task to feel validated and to grow into a team with his person. Because Homie can also be a charming dog who wraps someone around his paw. The best match for him would be a dog-experienced and consistent individual who can rehome him with clear structures from the start, which he can orient himself to. Since Homie cannot handle boundaries and tries to assert his will and also doesn’t allow anything to be imposed on him, his person must help him learn not to question everything anymore. Although Homie is generally compatible with fellow animals, he may defend resources against another dog in his future home. This behavior should be addressed if Homie is to be rehomed as a second dog. We would be very happy for the smart little guy if he didn’t spend his best years in the shelter kennel but found someone experienced who enjoys Homie training and is up for the challenge of turning him into a pleasant companion.

About Homie

What life with Homie looks like

Homie is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Homie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Homie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Homie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Homie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Homie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Homie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Homie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
