Huckleberry (Huck)

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Young · 2 years

Huckleberry, who is affectionately called Huck at the animal shelter Odai, was caught by dogcatchers on the street in March 2024 because passersby had noticed him. No one could contribute anything to his backstory, and Huck has not been missed up until now. Naturally, Huck had no chip, so it couldn't be traced back to where he might have originally belonged. Maybe Huck had simply run away because he was not satisfied with his life? Unfortunately, all of this is just speculation – but the most important thing is that Huck currently has a roof over his head, he gets something to eat, and he is almost ready to start his new life, because Huck is "ready for adoption." Huck has a sunny disposition, even though he initially approached the new situation with some skepticism. But Huck learns quickly and has directly noticed that nothing bad is intended for him at the animal shelter. He now looks forward to his little bit of free time and variety on Sundays and is learning to walk better on a leash. His Sunday trusted people have already won his heart, but it takes a bit longer for him to trust strangers, and he only opens up with a little patience and pieces of sausage. If there are enough of these and they are served to him, he will also form friendships with other two-legged beings. Since Huck does not throw himself into the arms of everyone and will likely still need support for certain situations in life, we hope for dog-experienced adoption requests for this handsome and clever fellow. In the ideal case, there are people on this planet who are currently looking for a new family member, in which they would also have to put in some work, so that Huck can develop into a brave and loyal companion and build the trust in his people that is needed. A visit to a good dog training class is highly recommended and will significantly advance the dog-human relationship, as is well known from shared learning. Otherwise, we wish Huck everything we wish every other dog that finds a new family: a home as a retreat where Huck can feel comfortable, good food and always fresh water, exciting walks and hikes in different terrain, sufficient stimulation and restful breaks, nice doggy neighbors and friends in the neighborhood and friend circle, and lots of love from his trusted people. © 2006-2024 by animal welfare association Europa e.V.

DE·Show original

© 2006-2024 by Tierschutzverein Europa e.V. - All rights reserved

About Huckleberry (Huck)

What life with Huckleberry (Huck) looks like

Huckleberry (Huck) is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Huckleberry (Huck), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Huckleberry (Huck)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Huckleberry (Huck) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Huckleberry (Huck) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Huckleberry (Huck) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Huckleberry (Huck) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Huckleberry (Huck) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
