Hugo AVAILABLE

Female · Adult · 4 years

Hugo is a stunning 4-year-old American Bulldog weighing 32kg, who came into the care of Islay Dog Rescue through no fault of his own following a change in his family’s circumstances. Hugo has lived in a family home and can live with dog-savvy children who understand and respect his space and boundaries. He is a lovely boy on the lead and enjoys getting out and about for long walks. He also loves playing chase with his toys and, as a strong and energetic boy, he will thrive with an active family who can keep him physically and mentally stimulated. Hugo can live with cats providing careful and appropriate introductions are carried out. He also travels well in the car, making him a great companion for adventures further afield. Hugo is a wonderfully social dog, full of charm and enthusiasm, but that same enthusiasm can tip into over‑friendly, boisterous behaviour around other dogs. He isn’t aggressive — just a big, strong lad who throws his whole heart into every interaction — yet this can be overwhelming for calmer or more sensitive dogs. Because of this, we feel he would be happiest and most settled as the only dog in the home, where he can enjoy all the attention, structure, and guidance he needs to thrive. Hugo is a clever boy who already knows some basic commands, including sit, down and paw. He absolutely loves his treats — especially chicken and ham! — which will be a great help when continuing his training and teaching him new skills.

About Hugo AVAILABLE

What life with Hugo AVAILABLE looks like

Hugo AVAILABLE is a large adult dog waiting at Islay Dog Rescue in Cumnock (Ayrshire).

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hugo AVAILABLE, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hugo AVAILABLE?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Islay Dog Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hugo AVAILABLE on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hugo AVAILABLE if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Islay Dog Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hugo AVAILABLE already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hugo AVAILABLE isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Islay Dog Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hugo AVAILABLE and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
