Hugo

Male · Young · 1 year

Meet Hugo! Hugo arrived at the centre at the end of May in a bit of a sorry state. After multiple scans, tests, biopsies and a tonne of good food, Hugo is now feeling much more himself and is on the lookout for his fun forever home. Being a young boy, Hugo is full of enthusiasm for life and can be very bouncy and excited, especially when going out for walks. He is a bit toy crazy and is especially keen on a good tennis ball and anything that has a squeaker that can be deconstructed! Hugo didn't have a good start in life and missed out on all of the joys that a puppy gets to experience, so is looking for an owner that has patience and is willing to put in the work and training that he missed out on when he was a baby. Currently, Hugo is on a very specific diet to help everything go smoothly with his weight gain but this is something that can be discussed with the staff at the centre. Hugo has been working on his social skills around other dogs here at the centre but it is unknown how he would feel sharing his home so a pet free home would be better suited for him. He can shout out when he sees other dogs so this is something that can be worked on, especially if you have a tasty snack or a fun toy. As he lack some manners, an adult only home is what he is looking for so that my training can be priority, to help him settle into his first normal life. About Hugo

What life with Hugo looks like

Hugo is a young adult dog waiting at National Animal Welfare Trust in Watford.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hugo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hugo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. National Animal Welfare Trust handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hugo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hugo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — National Animal Welfare Trust will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hugo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hugo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with National Animal Welfare Trust early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hugo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
