Hugo

Cocker Spaniel · Female · Young · 3 years

This is Hugo—a highly motivated working beagle. His two favorite pastimes in the whole world are using his nose for various tasks and carrying around—and showing off—his favorite toys. He’s a very social and energetic dog who loves joining in on all kinds of adventures involving an exciting scent trail or a long walk on a leash. Hugo is still a young dog and behaves just as energetically as one would expect; he’s looking for someone who appreciates that energy. He’s a highly trainable dog who responds well to cues. When Hugo first came to us, we were told that he’d displayed resource guarding toward other dogs, but we didn’t see any signs of that behavior here at our facility. However, during walks, he did tend to pick up and swallow inappropriate items. This behavior is called Pica and is often caused by gastrointestinal disorders—and that was indeed the case with Hugo. As a result, he’s been put on a specially formulated diet consisting of hypoallergenic food and will need to follow this diet for the rest of his life, along with medication to protect his stomach. Now that he’s receiving the right treatment and feels well, he no longer displays resource guarding or any urge to eat inappropriate things. He’s looking for a home where there’s interest in nose work and where mental stimulation is an integral part of dog ownership. To thrive, he needs both physical and mental enrichment, as well as plenty of time for recovery and rest. We also see great joy in him during obedience training and rally obedience. Hugo is a dog who loves to work and have fun together with his human—an ideal training partner. But most importantly, he’d probably love a home that shares his passion for toys—lots and lots of toys, if it were up to him! Please answer the questions below to get an indication of how your daily routine and plans align with a dog’s needs. This will help both you and us find the right match and provide the dog with a safe and loving home. You’ll need to complete this quiz before you can submit your expression of interest. The price ranges from 2,500 to 10,000 SEK, depending primarily on the dog’s age. A deposit of 2,000 SEK is required for a “booked” dog. Price guidelines: 8–16 weeks: 10,000 SEK 16 weeks–18 months: 8,000 SEK 18 months–3 years: 7,000 SEK 3–6 years: 6,000 SEK 6–10 years: 4,000 SEK Over 10 years: 2,500 SEK

About Hugo

What life with Hugo looks like

Hugo is a medium-sized young adult cocker spaniel dog waiting at Hundstallet in Stockholm.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding behavior with food and objects, needs to be only dog in household, requires experienced owner for training

🇸🇪Adopting from Sweden

Swedish shelters require an adoption application and home visit. Animals are chipped, vaccinated, and sterilized. Cross-border placements within the EU use the standard pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hugo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hugo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundstallet handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hugo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hugo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundstallet will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hugo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hugo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundstallet early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hugo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (SV). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
