Ivo

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Ivo arrived permanently in his new home in May 2018, including all the paperwork, after not only the trial period but also the vacation went wonderfully… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. I am male, neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and born around 2015. I am approximately 35cm tall. I have been waiting since November 2017 for a home. This is what my foster parents say about me: Ivo is a foster dog from a friend’s animal shelter and lives with us problem-free in a mixed pack of dogs. At the beginning, Ivo was a delicate little plant and needed a few days to gain confidence. Then he became a happy and social dog who loves to be with his people and will also snuggle affectionately. His self-confidence and the dog training class should be polished a bit more, which would surely be fun with the agreeable Ivo. New fellow animals are always curiously observed, and the first rounds of play are also commented on by the newcomer, if he allows it. Also, visitors are reported if they are on the other side of the fence. When he is on a leash and the door opens, Ivo is more shy than his first impression suggests. He shows more interest in small children and cats, but we think, given his character, he can be trained and patient to adapt to them. Without proper upbringing, he will develop a hunting instinct, but this can be countered well. Children are no problem if they are not overly enthusiastic and give him the time to get to know them gently. Ivo should be placed with people with dog experience or those who want to gather this experience with him. We would like to place Ivo as a second dog with a confident single dog. Then, the separation should not be a problem, as a single dog, it certainly requires the appropriate training. He needs adequate stimulation despite his small size and would not feel comfortable as a lap dog. Who would like to show the bold Ivo how great life can be and explore with him where the hare really runs…

About Ivo

What life with Ivo looks like

Ivo is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ivo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ivo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ivo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ivo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ivo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ivo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ivo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
