Jack

Akita · Male · Adult · 4 years

Hello folks, I am Jack, a big, wild, and very handsome mix of Akita, Malamute, and Malinois. Visually, you can still find traces of all three breeds on me, but character-wise, the Akita in me shines the most. I have a definite will and can hold on stoically and enduringly when clear rules and boundaries are shown in my everyday life. But if you do show me those, I happily accept them and then become a great companion who can really have fun. I walk nicely on a loose leash when guided well, have a lot of energy, and am always up for fun. For tasks that don't make sense to me, I need to be convinced first, but then I usually carry them out reliably. Unfortunately, I haven't learned to handle frustration in my old home, and waiting is not really my strong point either. I'm training both of these here at the animal shelter almost daily and am already making good progress. I'm friendly and open with people and love to be in the spotlight. Sometimes I get a bit overexcited and bump into people – but never out of malice, I just need to learn to be less impulsive. In free runs with other dogs, I usually get along well, but on a leash, I need guidance from my human, as I like to regulate the situation myself and sometimes pester other dogs. In your new home, clear rules should apply, and you should take over most of the decisions. Then I'll be a really cool dog. If you also want to leave the house sometimes without me destroying anything, we need to practice being alone, which I'm not very good at yet. You think we could be a good match? Then come and visit me here at the animal shelter. My caretakers and trainers would be happy to tell you more about me.

Euer Jack

About Jack

What life with Jack looks like

Jack is a large adult akita dog waiting at Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. in Remagen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jack, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jack?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jack on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jack if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jack already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jack isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jack and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
