Jan

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Jan could be rehomed on July 17, 2018…. I am male, neutered, and born around 2016. I have been waiting for a new home since January 2018. My caretakers say about me: Jan was seized by the authorities. In a household, over 30 cats lived, which had to be distributed among several animal shelters because our small animal shelter did not have enough space all at once. All were treated against common parasites, and the fur was visibly marked by malnutrition, which would regenerate with proper food over time. Jan shows a more quiet demeanor in the adoption room and stays in the background. However, he always stays close to people and is not yet fully brave enough to accept cuddles. He would like to, and with the help of treats, it does go well then. Then he enjoys them. Jan can be rehomed with a compatible fellow animal, provided there are children in the household who treat Jan understandingly, then that is no problem. Given his past, it would be nice if he could be rehomed as a second cat, as he enjoys the company of fellow animals. He does not necessarily need full freedom, and pure apartment living is conceivable for Jan. He loves the proximity to humans without being pushy so far. We are convinced that in the new home, with some training and the corresponding treats, he will quickly develop trust, once he has settled in. For his settling-in, a little patience should be brought, then the shy little kitten will surely quickly become a snuggling cat. He searches for a quiet home, preferably with fellow animals. Similarly, with freedom, if possible, he would enjoy it, but would also feel comfortable in pure apartment living. Who gives the loving and initially reserved young tomcat a chance and gives him his own home? The descriptions are impressions and photos of the animal in our animal shelter and our foster homes. Each animal can develop differently in the new home.

About Jan

What life with Jan looks like

Jan is a small adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
