Jana

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 9 months

Roy and Jana came into the care of our friends in Spain in June 2022. The two playful greyhounds were rescued with their mother - and you might hardly believe it, but the mother of the puppies with the unmistakable galgo blood is a purebred German Shepherd. When the trio was taken in, the female dog was naturally checked for a microchip, and surprisingly, a valid registration was found. The owner came to collect his long-lost female dog, but unfortunately showed no interest in taking care of the unexpected offspring. The animal welfare workers originally thought it would be easy to find a loving home for creatures like Roy and Jana, but now the siblings are nine months old (as of October 2022) and are still waiting for someone to invite them to leave the dull world of kennels, concrete floors and bars to start a life as a beloved family member. Roy and Jana are wonderful beings who combine the best qualities of their breeds. Both have a calm and balanced nature, which they probably owe to the galgo, but at the same time they are highly intelligent and very eager to learn - just like a German Shepherd. If you are already 60 cm tall at 9 months, you may not be considered a small dog, but Jana and Roy are elegant, very slender dogs that are often easier to handle than a Cocker Spaniel, who uses his weight to really get tangled in the leash. Still, Jana and Roy's ears are undecided (this could remain so, adding only to the entertainment value of the two teenagers), their hind legs occasionally overtake their front legs while playing, and you wonder how they manage to sort out these stilts that seem to have more joints than one would expect from an anatomy class, and a large part of their daily schedule consists of eating, sleeping and growing, but soon the awkward adolescents will become wonderful young adults who desperately need their own two-legged beings to love them and explain the world to them. Jana and Roy are looking for humorous, active people who want to take on an extraordinary mix. Children are great, as long as they can stand firmly on their feet when a greyhound whizzes past them - and also not resentful if you end up on your backside because the sprint miracle miscalculated a little. Cats are usually no problem for our running talents, although they are usually only their own; cats from neighbors are significantly more at risk of getting caught in the radar of the born hunters. If you feel called to give one of these beautiful photo models a home (or even both!), please feel free to contact our adoption team, we look forward to seeing Roy and Jana soon on a couch, surrounded by people who will spoil their new best friend or best girlfriend immensely (at least initially, this is perfectly fine).

DE·Show original

About Jana

What life with Jana looks like

Jana is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jana, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jana?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jana on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jana if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jana already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jana isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jana and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
