Jaro

Mixed Breed · Male

By the end of the year 2025, we were able to participate in a larger rescue operation after the hunting season to bring several Podencos from Pererra. Thanks to many kind donors, a total of eight Podencos, mostly severely emaciated and weakened, were able to move to the animal protection finca of Sarah and Sven. Male dog Jaro was among them. When we first saw him in the summer, he was still a sturdy, friendly, and lively dog. However, the months in Pererra have marked him significantly. When we finally took him in, he was nothing but skin and bones – exhausted, drained, and deeply uncertain. It became clear on the finca how much these times had shaped him. Jaro sought closeness but could barely enjoy it. He pressed himself tightly against his humans, as if searching for support, and appeared sad and lost. Even friendly companions could not initially reach him. With much patience, calmness, and loving care, Jaro began to slowly recover. Good food helped him regain his strength – but more importantly, time to rebuild trust. Today, we see the first, touching changes. Jaro is beginning to open up. His zest for life often blazes – when he plays cautiously, snatches a toy, and a piece of it flies away. Jaro is an incredibly sensitive, finely tuned, and very affectionate male dog. He seeks the closeness of his humans and has a great need for attention and security. For him, we wish for a quiet, empathetic home – ideally in the countryside or on the outskirts of a city. People who give him time, understand him, and offer him security. Jaro should not have to be alone as often as possible. Additionally, the possibility of secure free run, such as in an enclosed garden or a secured run, is important so that Jaro can move and settle at his own pace. A quiet, social first dog can be welcome, but a large pack would be too much for him. Who gives this special dog the closeness he so desperately needs and accompanies him on his journey back to life?

About Jaro

What life with Jaro looks like

Jaro is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Fuerteventura in Dransfeld.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jaro, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jaro?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Fuerteventura handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jaro on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jaro if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Fuerteventura will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jaro already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jaro isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Fuerteventura early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jaro and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
